Individual Prevention and Intervention for Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence and Those Who Have Caused Harm

Violence in Families

Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health concern impacting the development of children who experience it. This chapter summarizes the link between exposure to IPV and developmental impacts including early brain development and the onset of internalizing and externalizing symptoms, academic and social difficulties. The mediators and moderators to these associations including early attachment to parental figures, parental reflective functioning and emotion regulation, and the child’s environment are described. This is followed by a review of existing interventions for primary prevention, intervening with parents who have caused harm, and child-focused interventions following exposure to IPV. Given the impact of ongoing IPV and the mediating pathways of parental reflective functioning and emotion regulation to children’s outcomes, a focus on intervening with the parents who cause harm can be an important component to recovery for children who witness IPV. There are now a range of possible interventions in the field described in this chapter. Providing appropriate assessment and matching the needs of caregivers who have caused harm and their recovering children within the larger community context are needed. Having multiple possible intervention programs that allow for selection of the best fit will result in better outcomes for families.
